PS6: release date, price and specs – what we know

Last checked:

Short answer: Sony has not announced the PS6 yet, and has said itself that release date and price are not decided. Below is everything that is known – each point marked as confirmed, rumor or not decided.

TopicStatusWhat we know
AnnouncementNot decidedSony has not officially announced the PS6 – not even the name. Everything else on this page is either a statement by Sony about its plans or a leak.
Release dateNot decidedSony CEO Hiroki Totoki said in May 2026 that Sony has not decided when to launch the next console, and repeated it in later interviews. Leakers and analysts expect late 2027; because of the shortage of memory chips, more and more of them now expect 2028 or later.
PriceNot decidedSony has not decided on a price either. Totoki expects memory to stay very expensive and has said Sony does not want to sell the next console at a big loss. Guesses from leakers range from about $499 to $749 – none of them is backed by Sony.
HardwareRumorConfirmed: Sony and AMD work together on machine learning for graphics (“Project Amethyst”), and PS5 architect Mark Cerny has spoken of a future console “in a few years”. Rumored: an AMD chip codenamed “Orion” with Zen 6 CPU cores and an RDNA 5 GPU, with ray tracing several times faster than on PS5.
Backward compatibilityRumorThe best-supported rumor: the PS6 is said to run PS4 and PS5 games. Reuters reported in 2024 that Sony stayed with AMD partly to keep its games compatible. Sony has not confirmed it yet.
HandheldRumorSeveral leakers report a handheld that runs games itself – unlike PlayStation Portal, which streams them. It could come around the same time as the PS6. A PlayStation executive hinted at a new handheld in June 2026, without details.
Game discsConfirmedConfirmed by Sony in July 2026: from January 2028, new PlayStation games are released digitally only. Games that came out before keep being sold on disc. Whether the PS6 has a disc drive at all is not known.

What this means for your games today

If the PS6 runs PS5 games as expected, nothing you buy now is lost. In United States the PlayStation Store has 7,159 PS5 games right now, and 36 more have a release date.

356 of them are in PS Plus in United States, and 4,337 can be streamed from the cloud – also on PlayStation Portal. In total, PS Plus has 625 games in United States, including PS4 games and classics.
